Introduction to the working principle of peristaltic pumps
2022-12-26
The peristaltic pump works like two fingers squeezing a hose filled with liquid, and when the fingers slide forward, the liquid inside the hose will also flow forward with the sliding of the fingers. The peristaltic pump principle is the same as this, except that the peristaltic pump uses a roller inside the pump head to replace the fingers.
The fluid is pumped by alternately squeezing and releasing the pump's flexible delivery hose. As the fingers move, negative pressure is created inside the tube and the fluid flows. A peristaltic pump is a section of pump tube between two rotating rollers forming a "pillow" of fluid. The volume of the "pillow" depends on the internal diameter of the pump tube and the geometry of the rotor.
Peristaltic pump flow rate depends on the product of three parameters: the speed of rotation of the pump head and the size of the "pillow", the number of "pillows" generated by each revolution of the rotor. The size of the "pillow" is generally a constant (except in special cases, for example when conveying fluids with high viscosity). When comparing pumps with the same rotor diameter, a pump with a larger "pillow" volume will have a larger volume of fluid conveyed per rotation of the rotor, but will also have a higher degree of pulsation.
